Park History and Improvements
Benjamin Hill was a small ski area in the 1960's through 1970's which had a lodge and 8 slopes with rope tows and a T-bar. It was closed in the1970's and the lodge was destroyed by fire.
The property was acquired by the Town of Shirley and beginning in 2000, members of the Benjamin Hill Park Committee worked to turn the area into a fun family recreational park.
The pool house was completed in 2007 with donations of volunteer time, materials, and labor from area individuals and businesses.
The 136,000 gallon gunite pool had a major amount of work done in spring of 2013 when 30 coats of paint were removed by scraping and sandblasting. The cracks in the cement were then repaired and caulked and the pool was repainted fresh with depth numbers and safety lines. This was the biggest reconstruction project to the pool since the stainless steel gutters were installed.
A gravel walkway was installed in 2013 around the family playing field at Benjamin Hill Park. The walkway is 1/5 of a mile long, making it a great exercise option. Thanks to the work of Neil Guthrie and the donated material from the Shirley Department of Public Works. Conservation trails also run behind the park area.
In fall of 2014 the construction of a new storage shed, a covered porch entry on the pool house, and the Melloon Skating Rink pavilion was completed. The old tennis courts were ground up and replaced with a newly repaved tennis and basketball court area which will be lined and opened in 2015. The Mystical Maze Playground old wooden decking has been replace with new composite decking.
