How to Pay My Bill
Payment Methods Available to Property Owners in Shirley

As times change so do the way people pay their bills and Town of Shirley Collector's Office tries to accommodate everyone's preference. The following are the methods available to pay tax bills for Shirley tax payers.

Many taxpayers prefer the more personal touch of visiting the Collector's Office when making payments. This option will always be available to taxpayers of Shirley. Office hours for walk-in service are Monday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 – 12:30. Appointments for times the office is not open to the public are available upon request to those who need them. The Collector can be reached via e-mail, tax@shirley-ma.gov or, if you have questions and do not use e-mail please call the office at 978-425-2600, ext. 210.

Telephone Payments:
An often asked question is “Can I pay my bill over the telephone.” The simple answer is no, we cannot accept payments over the telephone.

Did you know that mail-in payments are now deposited directly into the Town of Shirley account at Fidelity Bank?
In an effort to make our collection process more efficient, the Town of Shirley utilizes a "lockbox service". The service works as follows:

All real estate, personal property and motor vehicle excise payments are mailed directly to the Fidelity lockbox. The mail address is Town of Shirley, P. O. Box 397, Fitchburg, MA 01420.

  • The mail is picked up by Fidelity Bank each business day and the checks are deposited that day into the Town of Shirley bank account
  • Fidelity creates a payment file using the bar code printed on the bill
  • The payment file and backup data are e-mailed to the Collector’s Office daily
  • The payments are posted to each account daily
The most important thing to remember is that when you mail in your check is to also send the correct part of the bill:
For Real Estate it is the top portion of the bill.
For Excise it is the bottom portion of the bill.

Did you know that when paying on-line through your bank a paper check is actually cut and sent to the Collector's Office?
Although it appears that the payment is made immediately, there is a lapse time associated with this process that could result in a late payment. In some instances it can take up to three weeks before your payment is received and posted to your account.

What happens when you hit the payment button?
  • In some cases your bank account is automatically debited, the funds are sent to a vendor and deposited into their account
  • It may take up to six days or more before the vendor cuts a check for your payment and sends it to the Collector's Office.
  • Some times there is very little reference information or the reference information is from a prior payment.
What are some of the problems with these checks?
  • Checks can be mailed to the incorrect address
  • Name of sender can be different than name of the person on the bill
  • Address of sender can be different than property location
  • Checks must be reproduced to provide back-up support for proof of payment
  • If there no reference information such as parcel number, excise bill number, time is spent researching the check to find where the payment is to be posted
If this is your preferred method of making payment the Collector's Office would appreciate it if you make sure that you referenced the Bill number and type of tax being paid. (ex.: 2017 Excise, No. 1965 or FY2017 Real Estate Tax 12-E-14.1).

What are the most efficient methods of bill payment available for the Town of Shirley?
  • Mail your payment -  Your check will be deposited into the Town of Shirley bank account and posted to your bill on the same day.
  • Go to Town of Shirley website, click on Pay Bills Tab and register for secure online bill payments. All payments are electronic and no paper checks are issued.
The lockbox service and On-line Payments are available for real estate, personal property and excise tax bills only. Our goal will be to expand this in the future to include Sewer Usage fees and, perhaps, other payables to the town.
