The Shirley Board of Health is a three member elected board and is also a member of the Nashoba Associated Boards of Health whose office is in Ayer, MA. The Nashoba Associated Boards of Health acts as our agent on many of the following duties:
- Health care and disease control
- enforcement of housing codes
- hazardous waste disposal/landfill monitoring
- Title V enforcement
- nuisance investigation
- food service establishments (enforcement of State Sanitary Code)
- safety and sanitation of pools and beaches.

Board of Health meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 7:30pm unless posted otherwise. Please call ahead to be put on the agenda.
ITEMS ACCEPTABLE FOR RECYCLING AT RECYCLING CENTER In addition to newspaper, cardboard, tin cans and plastics Shirley residents may bring the following items to the Recycling Center on Leominster Road. The Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, in conjunction with the Shirley Board of Health, has established the following program for disposal of sharps (syringes).
Sharps containers are available at the Board of Health office for $5.00 each (check made payable to Nashoba Associated Boards of Health)
Once the container is full it can be brought to the Nashoba Associated Boards of Health building in Ayer, 30 Central Ave., or the Nashoba Nursing Service in Shirley, 2 Shaker Road., Suite D225, Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. When dropping off the full container, a new container may be purchased.
Sharps can only be accepted in approved containers; persons who bring loose sharps or sharps in unapproved containers (i.e., detergent bottle or coffee can) will need to purchase the appropriate container for disposal and place the sharps in that container before they can be accepted. |
