New programs to be available soon at the New Shirley Senior Center
Beginning Thursday April 29th, we will be offering “Chair Yoga” for seniors at 9 AM. This 45 minute session is simple and effective. All motions are done either sitting in a chair or standing. NO lying on the floor is required. This is a great way to begin to improve your flexibility to continue your therapy if you just had some injury or surgery. Almost anyone can do this and its fun. The cost for the whole 8 weeks will be $25. Sign up sheets are available at the drop-in center or from the Director.
If you like to read and to discuss the books afterwards, we have a Book Club which will meet once a week at the senior center - Time and day to be set by the participants. Stop by the Senior center and sign up.
In May we will have “Craft Classes” on Thursdays at 1 PM. We have a list of 5-6 classes that will be offered based on expressed levels of interest. They include Knitting, crocheting, jewelry making etc. To see the full list, come by the drop in center and sign up, IF enough people are interested in a particular class, we will offer it. The cost is just $3/class for Shirley seniors.
Starting May 4th, we will be offering Line Dancing from 2-3 PM every Tuesday. The cost is $3/person payable at the session. If we have enough interest, we may expand it to a beginners and an advanced class later in the year. Contact the COA director if interested.
In the coming weeks we hope to announce other programs such as Oil or Water Color painting, Tai-Chi, and even BINGO (the friendly version). Also, we are developing a monthly speaker series on topics specific to the needs of seniors. We expect this information to be very useful to a wide range for seniors. Topics include Senior driving issues, Prescription drug interaction, changes to Medicare, etc All these are being finalized over the next few weeks. We may even see “ZUMBA” in Shirley this fall.
All this will be available soon at YOUR SENIOR CENTER.
